The World of THX - Theories
« on: March 27, 2007, 08:18:24 pm »

I wanted to jump on and asked the question more broadly.

What is the world of THX?

I offer the theory that, concidering the times and the clues in the script, it is an "ark" for the remaining members of society, after some cataclysmic event.

The builders of the underground city, needed to continue the species and give them a perpetual sense of purpose. That explains the consumer driven world (Soylent Cubes and Credits) and the activities of sport, television and religion. It would also explain the shelldwellers, damaged by radiation, and the fear of the outside. And, if you take SEN's clues, the underground city is at least 3 generations old, proving the nuclear or biological nature of the disaster. The clue of creatures in the computers(Ghosts in the Machine), show the protections of the city are not needed and a facade, as the world is creeping into their sanitary home. It is as if the creators of this world never planned an exit strategy, which seems to fall in line with our government over the last 30+ years.

Of course, we don't know if it is safe. As THX could fall dead, poisoned by a tainted Earth. And we do not know what he saw, if you go strictly by the movie. But, even if he did, isn't the one brief and fleeting taste of freedom worth a lifetime of servitude, in a never ending mobius loop of create and consume?
