Trash Dump scene?
« on: June 12, 2004, 09:07:20 pm »

This might of been posted before, but with new members I wanted to ask.
Has anyone read the script, especially the scene with THX in the Trash Dump area. It never made the first movie, but it sounds very similar to the Star Wars scene from the original first movie with Luke, Han Solo, and the princess trying to escape?

Just wondering....

Could you describe this scene ?

Does it similar to the scene in the Death Star's garbage with the monster ? I think I've read George Lucas failed to do this scene for THX then he brought it for SW.

Yes. It is the scene in the death star with the long snake monster thing....

I haven't seen where Geaorg has said he wanted to use it in THX. WHere did you read that.

I think it is fairly obvious if you read the THX script, that it is the same idea.

Just interesting how he was able to recycle it for STAR WARS :-)

Not really amazing. THX has many links with SW, as Buck Rogers musics used in the film (but this is not the right forum).

The trash scene from Star Wars "New Hope" was actually totally
inspired from the original THX script. Somewhere about 12 years ago
I read an article with Lucas discussing the pre Star Wars trilogy.

Somehow the topic of THX came up and he addressed the  trash scene. I cannot remember exactly when this was but it was right before Star Wars 1 ( Second Trilogy release)

At the time I was living in London.......But I cannot remember the Magazine/Paper it was in :-$

I would love to read that article.....

I haven't seen GL talk much about THX.

I am sure the DVD will includes lots of interview goodies about the making of, etc....

Nobody liked THX, nor the audience, nor the producers, nor Lucas' friends, only a few fans and "Art et Essai" critics. Sad

Lucas did this film mainly for himself. And for us...

I can understand it, but it's unfair. THX 1138 is a wonderful film, we know that. Lucas loves it and often refers to it in his films.

I think he does not speak about THX because nobody is interested by. When you're a journalist and have the chance to interview George Lucas, you'll talk about Star Wars and not THX...
Lucas talks a little about the film in a interview dating March 1977. He says "THX is my brain, American Graffiti is my heart. Star Wars is a mix of the both. THX 1138 represents me when I was 20 and asking myself many questions about freedom, power, politics and all the problems of the 60's."

It's interesting to know that one of Lucas' teachers in the USC was Herbert Marcuse, a leader of the Frankfurt School.

The trash scene is in the novel - after the mindlock, THX escapes and ends up going through all that sludge, but is summarily caught.

Honestly, I'm glad this bit didn't make the film. Having him make the big run for his life twice would be pretty anticlimactic!  :?

Another example of the many links between THX and the StarWars saga.
In the DirectorŽs Cut DVD 1, the sound designer explains how the electric sound used for the guardŽs sticks in the prision scene (when 3 of them are poking THX just for fun) is the grandpa of the Jedi light saber sound effect.
