Hi SG,
I get your point that the film was made in a time when sequels were'nt envisioned, but are'nt we allowed to dream?
This is the whole point of the ending sequence, you see THX step out into an unknown world, beating the oppression, but not knowing what lays ahead for him, so all we are doing is coming up with scenarios, according to our way of thinking.
I really think that this is what GL wanted us to do. Why else would he of left the film on such an open ending?

Hi Don,
You are exactly right in your assumption that the end credits with THX standing on the edge of the tunnel he has just climbed up, would spark off different thoughts in different people, depending on their thought process.
I like the way you have also included the music on the credits to your assumption of the story.
Talking about the Music, do you, or anyone else know if the Soundtrack can be purchased?
Years ago I made up my own soundtrack, taking the music from the Film and putting it on Audio Tape, I really enjoy listening to the Music and would love a professional Soundtrack if there is one.
I also have the whole Film as Audio on another Tape, as I used to enjoy listening to it in Bed on my Headphones, before I had a Partner. (Can't imagine my Partner putting up with me laying in Bed listening to THX every night! Lol! ) I have seen the film so many times that I can actually watch the Film in my head whilst listening to it!
Like you say, the robots tell THX there is no where to go, cause, at the end of the day, they are only robots, programmed to believe whatever they are told, just like our Computers, they only know what we put in them, no more, no less.
There is a world out there for THX to explore, but what is there, none of us will ever know, but it's great to dream though is'nt it??!!!

No, it is not enough to dream. We must live out our dreams. Or at least try.
Unlike THX, we have options. That is the message I glean from the film.
Unlike this made up, oppressive, exagerated version of existance titled THX 1138, the real world is worth living in. Unlike THX, we in America are granted rights and privlages that we have become so accustomed to, we ignore them. I could easily turn this into a long-winded preach fest but I wont. But I will go down fighting. I think Lucas was saying something so deep that only eccentric artist could understand.
Of course, it's possible that an eccentric artist like me just reads too much into it.
Now, TUX, about the music - go to
www.filmscoremonthly.com
and pray they haven't sold out. You're going to love it!

THX-1138 is the kind of filmmaking that Lucas needs to get back to. I love Star Wars. Even the prequels are nowhere near as bad as some disgruntled Star Wars fans claim, even if they were disappointed. They just aren't up there with the original SW trilogy.
I think Lucas has been in the SW universe too long, and would be better served to get back to the kind of filmmaking he claims to really love, filmmaking like he did with THX and American Graffiti. Then I think you'll see Lucas return to form.

I personally would not like to see a sequel done, I think it would detract from the artistry and legacy of the original. It is just such a classic, better left untainted by some cheesy sequel. Plus it would probably be filled with all kinds of cgi crap which I personally loathe. They do not make movies like that anymore, true creativity and imagination.
Now if they could get Robert Duvall back...

I concur. It is rare that you have to actually think anymore with a movie. Consider "A Beautiful Mind" with the twist of seeing the halucinations as reality from Nash's point of view. The popular press (i.e.: drivel for the drooling) lauded it as something great.
Yeah, it was great. You didn't have the whole thing spoon fed to you. Bring back a THX-esque movie and I would love it. The problem is that it would not sell. For that reason, it will not be made.
-Don
PS. I don't need a CGI-based masterbatatron to tell me that THX
REALLY
likes the dancing black woman. (Personal pet-peeve of the new release THX).

I don't understand it.
Lucas claims that he wants to "get back to making films more like THX 1138" but I can't imagine what he means by that. I don't think he can do that sort of thing anymore. I can't understand how he has spent the last 15 years or so producing these SW prequels.
I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ANYMORE!
At least I still have my vhs copies of SW and THX. Perhaps it is as it should be...
Just imagine if the only way to view classics like METROPOLIS or SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME was to rig up a reel to reel and watch actual film
projected on a wall in the dark...
OK enough of that. Look, sequels are junk by design. A great film like THX 1138 does not need a sequel to justify it's existance. More importantly - in MY opinion - even a decent sequel would only trivialize the film. Just as - in MY opinion - the very mention of the words STAR WARS conjures up some ridiculous notion of "the STAR WARS universe" and all its wacky adventures instead of the really solid piece of story telling that the original is.
But money talks and MY BS can just take a walk...

who knows , maybe he,or sombody else could possibly go back and find the whole underground structure empty and dark, the whole project abandoned, leaving everything to decay and fall apart. after all there were some who were talking about a revolution or a revolt and maybe was not just ideas isolated in the detention center.

But throughout the film, no one has a conversation outside of the detention center except THX and LUH, and they end up doing the sexact.
SEN talks to THX about THX moving in with him. Even in the detention center there are those who are talking, but it is all monologue. Two monologues speaking at teach other is not really a dialogue.
Just some thoughts
