Coming attractions
In this week's roundup of still-in-the-works entertainment projects, we have George Lucas news (and it's not even Star Wars-related!), a new project from American Idol's Randy Jackson and another pay cable western drama about to hit the trail.

DVD
The future is now for Lucas' 'THX 1138'

Before he revved up American Graffiti and blasted into Star Wars, George Lucas envisioned THX 1138, a futuristic take on a totalitarian 25th century. It became his first film, released in 1971, and now has a digital face lift.

The restored version â?? with cleaner video and Dolby Digital surround sound â?? gets a revival starting Sept. 10 with theatrical showings in 20 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. On Sept. 14, the DVD THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut arrives.

The two-disc collector's edition ($26.99; a single-disc version, $19.97) includes a making-of documentary; a documentary on Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope studio, which made its debut with THX 1138; and Lucas' student short that inspired the feature.

"THX 1138 is how I saw 1970," says Lucas, who eventually gave the name THX to the theater sound certification company he founded. "It was designed as a metaphor for the way we were living at the time. The world has taken a strange twist from there, but I think the ideas we examined in THX 1138 are still valid in the 21st century."

Warner and Lucasfilm today launch a Web site (www.thx1138movie.com) that aims "to remind people about the power of this movie," Warner's Mike Radiloff says.

I just saw this too. All I have to say is: YES!

And Aw, CRAP!    Check out their new site:

http://www.thx1138movie.com/

Looks like I'll be second banana in the THX-1138 web game!

If I had the time & resources this is what I would turn thx-1138.org into!  Sad

At least we now have some actual *official* confirmation.

Yes, that site is AMAZING!

Did you guys watch the trailer? How do you feel about the new effects?

I like 'em, but I'm annoyed the original won't be on there, as well. Guess I gotta buy a boot!

Someones will think that ILM and its CGI shots is treachering the original spirit (as Star Wars but I don't think so), but I am really curious !!

Huh ?

Heh, I meant that for a few years now, THX-1138.ORG (such as it is, with a few exceptions) has pretty much been it on the web wrt THX 1138.  I wonder what their future plans are for the official site, if they have any.

Being run by the starwars.com people (check out /legal.html on there) I hope I don't hear from them in a bad light.  I know they are pretty rabid when it comes to Star Wars -related sites.... Here's hoping.

Just found this site. Not as cool as the new official site, but pretty cool anyway! I didn't even know there were other fans out there.  Can't wait for the director's cut. Finally GL's original vision!

Is this going to be in theaters in Baltimore or DC? I don't want to drive 2 1/2 hrs to Philadelphia to see it in a theater, (unless I must). I MUST, I MUST!!!

This is going to be one of the best DVD's ever! Shocked

With as much as gas costs now, it would be cheaper to buy a big screen TV than drive anywhere!

I'm sure this will probably make it to at least a few theaters in France. The French seem to appreciate this type of film more than average Americans (except for those of us at this site, of course).

I have a question about the official site. I get that TRL 0521 is the trailer, and DVD 0914 the dvd, and MOV 0910 is about the film itself, but what does the EVN 0910 stand for and why cant we access it yet?

Anybody want to speculate?   Sad

I recently had en email conversation with Don Pedro Colley, and he mentioned that there's going to be a big reunion of the THX cast and crew and the Zoetrope guys in New York, but that's happening on 0909, not 0910. Still, maybe it's something to do with that?

Maybe, I hope so, but don't make illusions: art films are seen in France by a so few audience than anywhere (just more are created !)... Maybe in 2 or 3 theaters in Paris region... And we know George Lucas...  Sad
