George Lucas,the man .....
« on: March 17, 2007, 02:12:27 pm »

In your own opinions what makes this director, for lack of a better word, a legend? what is it about his films that everyone seems to flow with rather you be one of philosophical mind or just looking for entertainment, what makes him so great? or is he at all?

Good question!

Surely his success with Star Wars was a great boon to his reputation.  I think that his work on THX-1138 has not been equaled by him, though.  It seems that his vision was keen with THX and Star Wars (ep. IV), but declined as his popularity rose.  Evidence to this is 1) the remake of THX - why change what was definitely a superb 70's dystopic film if not because of the success in using technology. And, 2) the downright crappiness of the latest SW films.

In my opinion, and it is only opinion, it seems that he was a genius that was overcome by success.  Now his films lack that genius quality.

i understand your point, since he has become famous the corporate world he hated so much consumed him becoming what he never wanted to be in the first place, i think the last star wars episodes were more of a 'hurry up and just get it over with' type of feel to it. thx he should have never touched. wich leads to my point, george lucas in my opinion wasnt a great director because of his stories alone, he was great because the power of limitations held him back from letting him do what he truly wanted,(overload on sfx).it forcedhim to improvise, and focus more on the story instead. thats why i think his early work felt so real to us.

I agree.

It seems that when one is poor and downtrodden, it is natural to shout out against corporations etc.  But now he is part of what he hated so much.

Good point on the limitations.  Nothing in THX (original) was something not found in America in 1970.  He just used it in a new and different way, looked at it from a different angle.  Even the sounds are everyday sounds that are overdubbed, played backwards, etc.  Nothing artificial, just reused from today.

exactly, even today i still think he couldve pulled off the prequels using most of the technology from 20 years ago. can you imagine how terrible the originals wouldve been if he had todays technology back in those days?

It is amazing to see what could be done in 1973 and 1977 with the technology and budget of the day.

But, as usual, the mob wants to go for the special effects and techno-wizardry that even invaded the new THX release.

I wonder what the new THX revenue was in the theaters compared to 1973?
