I dont know if this has been brought up, but,I found it interesting that the society in THX's world can  parrallel with eastern religion,for example:
the hindu caste system-
          brahmans (priests)= same-grey robes
          Kshatriyas (warrior class)=officers/yellow suits
          Vaishyas (trades/agriculture)=red suits?
          Shudras (labor class)-white suits
          untouchables-shell dwellers
just like in THX, you are born into the caste system, you have no choice of what you want to be.
 also the use of:OM-to hindus this is the most sacred syllable,symbolizing the infinite Brahman and the entire Universe,OM=OMM. this system and use of OM is also active in buddhism. given the year that this film was made and that George Lucas was fresh out of college during the time that eastern philosophies were highly influential, i say that it makes the world of THX just that little more easier to understand.
